PUNE: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has revised monthly charges for hawkers from Rs 20 per day to up to Rs 200 per day or Rs 6,000 per month based on the classification as per their businesses and area. The civic body had not revised these charges for over 25 years. Although this hike has got final approval and the new charges have been implemented for hawkers having PMC certificates, some hawkers’ unions are opposing the move.
President of Shivrai Vichar Pathari Sanghatana, one of the hawkers’ unions has written to Mayor Mukta Tilak and Municipal Commissioner Kunal Kumar demanding rollback of the hike as it is a burden on the hawkers. “If PMC tries to collect a hefty amount it is impossible for them to pay and hence there will be a tendency among hawkers to avoid registration with the civic body. That means PMC will not be able to monitor their activities, which may lead to a chaotic situation as illegal hawkers will encroach upon city roads. So hawkers’ monthly charges should be reduced to Rs 600,” Ravindra Malvadkar of the union demanded.
